Cryoplasty versus angioplasty in the treatment of arterial restenosis in an experimental model of atherosclerosis in rabbits

2014

Abstract Cryoplasty may reduce the incidence of post-angioplasty restenosis in peripheral atherosclerotic arteries. Our study is looking to investigate the mid-term effects (4 weeks) of an FDA-approved cryoplasty catheter (PolarCath®, Boston Scientific) compared to a conventional angioplasty catheter using a hypercholesterolemic rabbit model of arterial restenosis based on diet plus vessel injury. Thirty-six normolipidemic, 3-month old male New Zealand White rabbits were used. Balloon angioplasty was performed on left external iliac arteries on day 1. Animals were fed with a hypercholesterolemic diet for 60 days. On day 120, three groups of animals were established: conventional PTA (percut…

Interaction of cerebrovascular disease and contralateral carotid occlusion in prediction of shunt insertion during carotid endarterectomy

2012

INTRODUCTION To assess the possible role and the interaction of cerebrovascular disease and vascular stenosis on the necessity of shunt insertion during carotid endarterectomy (CEA). MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty consecutive patients undergoing CEA under regional anaesthesia were prospectively enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups depending on whether they were shunted or not. The measured end-points were co-morbidities degree of contralateral and carotid stenosis and other intra- and postoperative outstanding parameters. ANOVA, Student's t and χ(2) tests were used (p<0.05). Variables differing significantly between groups and potential confounders were used in backward stepwise log…

Gegenüberstellung der Wertigkeit von Angioskopie, Angiographie und Sonographie zur Erfassung pathologischer Gefäßwandprozesse

1994

AIMS The ability of angioscopy, angiography and sonography to evaluate arteriosclerotic vascular lesions were compared to determine if angioscopy is a valuable addition in the diagnostic armamentarium. METHODS An in-vitro study was selected to enable microscopic assessment of the arteries. Angiography was followed by sonography and endoscopy and finally the vessels were evaluated macro- and microscopically. RESULTS The configuration of the vascular stenosis (plaque-shape, semicircular-eccentric, circular-concentric) was more reliably defined with angioscopy as compared to angiography and sonography. Intense calcification of plaque was detected sonographically with a high sensitivity (90%) u…
